Who is a Snapper Green for?

A Snapper Green is for all children at primary and intermediate school (Year 1 to Year 8). It already has a travel concession applied which entitles them to child fare discounts on public transport.
When used on all GO Wellington, Airport Flyer, Valley Flyer and Runcimans buses, the Snapper Green automatically applies a child fare, plus the 20% discount (compared to cash) for using Snapper.
See the full list of Snapper bus partners.

Can children use a Snapper Red?
Yes, all secondary school students (Year 9 to Year 13) should use a Snapper Red.
The classic Snapper Red comes pre-programmed to charge an adult fare. However, a travel concession can be applied onto the Snapper which in the case of secondary school students who are in full-time education entitles them to the same child fare concession as a Snapper Green.

Can children use their school ID to Snapper their bus fares?
Many schools have chosen to have their student ID card issued with Snapper built in.
See the list of schools currently using a Snapper student ID card.
-
What is a travel concession?
A travel concession is applied onto a Snapper so the user can receive discounted travel if they are entitled to it.
Once a Snapper has had a concession applied onto it, it becomes that cardholder's personal Snapper and shouldn't be used by anyone else.
A Snapper Green and Snapper Mini.Jr already has a travel concession applied on the card and will only charge the discounted child travel concession on Wellington bus services that have Snapper.

- First name
- Last name

Do children need to tag off too?
Yes, everyone that uses a Snapper to travel should tag off.
The Snapper system works the same for all Snapper cards and devices, plus any new devices that we may issue.
Snapper uses GPS (Global Positioning System) information to record which stop you get on the bus or ferry and where you get off. This information is used to calculate the correct discounted fare for the journey.
If you don't tag off, the system assumes that you travelled to the end of the line and charges a penalty fee, as set by the transport service provider (e.g. the bus company).
The tag off penalty for both GO Wellington and Valley Flyer is the full cash fare. So if you don't tag off your fare is calculated to the end of the line, and you don't receive the 20% discount. This penalty fare is set by the transport service provider.
