Snapper is great for school kids – no need to bother with bus fare or lunch money any more. If your Snapper is topped up at the start of the week, then you’re sorted.
Snapper is great for parents – you can see where a Snapper is being used, top it up online, and make sure it is spent on bus fare or lunch, and not on lollies by checking the Transaction History and the online balance.

Travel concession
Wellington
If you're an enrolled student at school in Wellington you'll want to make sure that you get the child fare discount when you use Snapper on the bus or the ferry. Your school may have already issued you a Snapper School ID, in which case your travel concession has already been applied to your card and you're ready to use it on the bus.
Just make sure you top it up and away you go. Check here to see if you're at a school with Snapper ID. If you're in years 1-8, then you can buy a Snapper Green or a Snapper Mini.Jr and you'll automatically get the child fare discounts on buses and ferries. As with any other Snapper, just make sure it's topped up.
If you're using any other type of Snapper such as Snapper Red, Snapper Sprat, Snapper Mini, or a Snapper USB then you'll need to get your travel concession applied to your Snapper A travel concession on your Snapper tells the readers on buses to charge the discounted fare when you travel.
To have a travel concession applied to your Snapper visit a Snapper service centre and bring some ID with your date of birth, plus proof of school attendance, alternatively email concessions@snapper.co.nz (using your school email address) with the following information:- First name
- Last name
- Snapper ID number
- Date of Birth
- Name of school you are currently enrolled in
Remember, if you don't get a concession applied to your Snapper then you'll be charged the full adult fare whenever you use the bus.
If you have a Snapper Green, Snapper Mini.Jr or a Snapper School ID, you will automatically receive the discounted child fare. There's an easy way to check if you're paying the right fare on the bus. When you tag on, if you hear two beeps, then you've been charged the child/concession fare. If you hear just one beep, then that means you're being charged the adult fare. You can also check online by registering your Snapper and creating a Snapper account so you can view your transaction summary and type of concession you have.

Snapper Red or Green?

Snapper Green and Snapper Mini.Jr are for primary and intermediate school students - Year 1 to Year 8
Snapper Green and Snapper Mini.Jr are for primary and intermediate school students (Year 1 to Year 8). The Snapper Green and Snapper Mini.Jr give you instant access to discounted child fares without having to do anything else to the card.
Year 8 students can choose a Snapper Red instead, or any other Snapper, but will need to have a travel concession applied to their card at a Service Centre before they can receive the discounted child fare. A travel concession is applied onto a Snapper so the user can receive discounted travel if they are entitled to it. A Snapper Red with a travel concession can then be used all the way through secondary school (Year 9 to Year 13)

Snapper Red and all other Snappers are for secondary school students - Year 9 to Year 13 (and adults)
All secondary school students will need to have a travel concession applied onto their Snapper before they can receive the discounted child fare. A travel concession tells the readers on buses and ferries to charge the discounted child fare when you travel.
There's an easy way to check if you're paying the right fare on the bus. When you tag on, if you hear two beeps, then you've been charged the child fare. If you hear just one beep, then that means you've been charged the adult fare. You can also check online by registering your Snapper and creating a Snapper account so you can view your transaction summary and type of concession you have. For more information on the choices available check out the different Types of Snapper or visit the Snapper store.

About Snapper passes
Passes are currently available through Wellington's Runcimans bus company. Monthly and school term passes can be loaded onto a Snapper at selected Snapper retailers.
Find my nearest Snapper retailer where I can load a pass onto my Snapper.
Using a pass on a Snapper is easy. Just tag on at the start of your journey, and tag off at the end of your journey, just the same as usual. It is important to tag on AND tag off so that the Snapper system processes your journey correctly. If you don't tag off you may be charged a penalty. See your bus company's terms and conditions for more information.

Pay by Snapper at school
Like hundreds of other shops all around New Zealand, you can use your Snapper to buy your lunch at the school tuck shop, or to pay for things in the school office.
Find out if my school accepts payment by Snapper.
If you want to pay by Snapper at school, here's what to do:
- Find your purchase, and when it comes time to pay, just ask to pay by Snapper.
- The Snapper reader will show the amount you need to pay.
- Hold your Snapper to the Snapper reader.
- The Snapper reader will sound a “beep”, flash a blue light, and your new balance will be displayed on screen to confirm your transaction has been completed.
- That's it... you’re done! No PIN, no receipt. It's just the fastest way to pay.
Note: Don't wave or "swipe" your Snapper. The reader needs time to be able to "talk" to your Snapper in order to work. Hold your Snapper to the reader and keep it still until the transaction is complete. The Snapper process takes less than a second, so you won't be there long! For more information see Snapper technology.
