All product and service providers who offer credit card and debit card payment options to their customers, incur fees from their bank and the credit card companies (such as Visa and MasterCard) when processing credit card and debit card transactions. Snapper retailers are no different, and these transaction fees are a direct cost to a retailer’s business.
Many New Zealand companies are now choosing to pass these transaction fees directly to customers who choose to pay via credit card or debit card, rather than swallow the fees and increase the price of the product or service for everyone.
With this in mind, we wish to advise that transaction fees associated with the payment of Snapper top ups can be passed onto the cardholder by Snapper retailers where a cardholder has chosen to pay by this method.
What this means for you, the cardholder, is that in some cases, when using credit card or debit card to pay for your Snapper top-up, you may be charged an additional fee on top of the standard 25c top up service fee.
We of course have some expectation on how transaction fees will be passed on to our cardholders, and we want to minimise any inconvenience to you by ensuring that the customer experience at Snapper retailers is as consistent as possible. As such we have asked that Snapper retailers ensure:
- Transaction fees aren’t excessive or unreasonable – and that they are consistent with buying any other product in store. For example, a retailer should not impose fees on Snapper top-ups alone if there is no additional fee to purchase other products in the store
- They offer a fee-free option for paying for Snapper top-ups such as EFTPOS or cash, noting that sometimes EFTPOS transactions are subject to a minimum amount at the retailer’s discretion, acting reasonably.
- Any transaction fees are clearly communicated to you at the time of purchasing your Snapper top-up, as well as any alternative payment options.
- Cardholders are not required to purchase another product to access topping up a Snapper card.
If you feel that your experience at a Snapper retailer does not meet expectations, or is not in-line with our expectations, we’d like to know about it so please get in touch.
