Snapper has been in a long-term relationship with Wellington since 2008. We’re serious about Wellington, and to show our love and make every day a bit easier for this wonderful city, we support a number of Wellington-based projects and events.
Snapper in the community
In 2009, we partnered with the Greater Wellington Regional Council to develop a personalised photo ID card with the Snapper smart card chip built in for the Total Mobility scheme. This scheme provides a subsidised taxi service for the 7,500 people in the Wellington region who, because of a disability, cannot use regular bus or train services.
The Total Mobility Snapper card replaced the outdated paper voucher system, making the system safer and easier to use for taxi drivers and Total Mobility customers in Wellington.
CubaDupa is Wellington’s vibrant street festival revering the epic creative spirit of Cuba Street and the Wellington community. Each summer, Wellington’s most iconic street is transformed into a magical interactive playground of delight, sound and taste.
To make it just that little bit easier for the international artists who perform at CubaDupa to travel around our fabulous city, we supply them with Snapper cards. And smiles. And with any luck, great weather (although we can’t really take credit for the weather).
Red Cross Refugee Resettlement Programme
The Red Cross does excellent work welcoming refugees to Wellington and helping them settle in. When refugees arrive in Wellington, they are supported by qualified social workers, refugee-background case workers, cross-cultural workers and trained volunteers, who help them understand Kiwi culture, learn to manage systems and ultimately find suitable work.
We make sure that, nestled in their induction pack, there is a Snapper card to help them navigate their new home town. After all, they’re our peeps now.
Gold-coin bus fares in the weekends before Christmas 2015
When the Wellington City Council wanted to make it cheaper to get into town during weekends in the lead up to Christmas, we put our hands up to help. Dave and Jade, members of our Information Management team, made the necessary changes to our system late on Friday nights, and spent the weekends monitoring and fixing issues to make sure it all went off smoothly. Then in the wee hours of Monday, they’d change everything back to the regular fares.
We did it all for you, Wellington. You’re our boo.
Charity IT Hackathon
We like techie types here at Snapper – we have quite a few of our own. So, in 2015, we sponsored the Charity-IT hackathon. The event saw more than 40 volunteers working together over a weekend to deliver IT projects for four charities: Able Pet Care, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Kiwi Community Assistance and Nature Through Arts Collective.
The results were impressive, with all four charities receiving completed IT projects that they desperately needed and did not have the resources to implement without this volunteered support. We love being involved in a good cause that impacts Wellington businesses and stimulates growth within a tech environment.
Wellington Community Ministries
Our friends at Wellington Community Ministries provide a range of social services for their clients, including a drop-in centre, emergency housing, a food bank, early childhood education and supported accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities.
To make their fantastic work a bit easier, we supply them with some loaded Snapper cards each year. Their clients use the cards to attend appointments, get their kids to school, take food parcels home, and to travel to work.
